The Skywarn Recognition Day (SRD) operation at NWS CTP was successful. In addition to the preparation for the event, net operations worked well and netted twenty eight (28) check ins over twelve (12) repeaters in the thirty three (33) county NWS CTP coverage area. One check in was from Dunkirk, New York!
From 9:00 to 11:00 local time on Saturday, Dec 1, 2018 Greg, K3HOT, Rick, K3ROG, and Carmine, K3CWP operated WX3CTP, the National Weather Service VHF station. When stations checked in they were asked to report their location, call sign, name, a brief WX report, and their equipment.
As a result of this event we have a very good idea of repeater coverage throughout the 33 county area. This will be invaluable during Skywarn activations.
Thank you to Greg and Rick for taking time out of their day and to Matt Steinbugl, K3MRS, and Peter Jung of NWS CTP for making all of this possible. Additionally, two Blair County amateur radio operators, Mike, W3MRW and Kevin, W3XOX, who drove up from the Altoona area to staff the station from around 12:00 to 14:30. Carmine somehow missed that they planned to come in for ‘mutual aid’. None the less, their help is appreciated.
Thanks also to all the stations who checked in!
