Centre County/NARC hams help with American Veterans’ Appreciation Day at Lake Raystown

On Saturday, September 9th, 2012, Carmine, K3CWP and Elaine, K3ERP, Prestia provided amateur radio support to the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary District 5 Northeastern Region, Bedford County (PA) Amateur Radio Society, and the Disabled American Veterans (Virginia and Pennsylvania Chapters) at Lake Raystown for the American Veterans’ Appreciation Day.

The event provided the opportunity for veterans to take fishing trips or simple boat rides on Lake Raystown from the Seven Points Marina.  Carmine and Elaine joined a number of other hams from the Bedford area providing point to point communications on 2 meter simplex among the USCG command post, the Oak Pavilion where food was being served, and the docking locations where veterans were getting on and off of the boats.  It was a long shift (5:30 AM to 12:00 PM) but worth the effort for the benefit of participating veterans.
