The National Weather Service and the ARRL have announced December 5th, Saturday as Skywarn Recognition Day to celebrate the contributions that volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the National Weather Service.
Centre County ARES and the National Weather Service office in State College will participate this year by doing the following:
- Centre County EC, K3CWP will activate the County EMA station at 09:00.
- Two volunteer amateur radio operators will go to the NWS office to activate that station at 09:00. The station operates VHF only. The drill will be conducted on the W3GA repeater, 146.76, PL 146.2.
- The NWS station will activate a net at 09:00 by calling for any stations wishing to check in.
- Stations checking in will give their call signs, location, and an observation about the weather in their area.
- After about one half an hour the operators at NWS will close the net and the station and leave.
- The list of stations checking in will be forwarded to the Centre County EC, K3CWP.
The EC will forward the results of the of the drill to the appropriate ARES and NWS officers.
